They needed someone that would not cause them any problems and would do exactly what they said. They agreed Jefferson would be the right fit for the job. He was well known in his small community for being an honest man and this is exactly the image they needed to hide their wicked schemes behind.

Because of his views, it is hard for Jefferson to realize the corruption that is taking place around him. Those that are in on the scheme laugh behind his back and pass Jefferson off as a fool that doesn’t belong in the Senate. But they soon learn that he is not the simple man they all thought him to be.

Jefferson realizes he is being used. He also comes to learn that the Senate is filled with corrupt politicians seeking personal gain. At first he is stunned, then he rises to the occasion by standing up against his adversaries.

Jefferson takes the Senate floor for hours, exposing the wrongdoings of various Senators. He recites the United States Constitution word for word. He makes sure his voice is heard. Jefferson continues on to the point of exhaustion and passes out on the State floor. His voice is finally heard and the American people tout him as a hero for going up against the entire Senate.

Although this is a well known and widely received film, it did have its critics. American politicians took offense to the portrayal of Senators being men you could not trust. Several others took fault with how the movie represented America to foreign Nations. There were several countries that actually banned the film.

Mr Smith Goes to Washington did what its filmmaker set up to do. It got people talking about the system and giving those that run it a closer look. The film also proved that it only takes one person to do the right thing no matter how important or insignificant they may be.

Not a fan of Nora Ephron? Well, she hasn’t exactly been knocking them out of the park, lately. The film stars Steve Martin as an Italian gangster who’s just entered the witness protection program, and Rick Moranis as the FBI agent assigned to handle his case. Martin moves into a small town and, yes, it’s another, typical fish out of water story, but it’s well done, and when it’s an old story, what matters is that it’s well done.

Of course, what it REALLY comes down to is if the movie is funny, and this one is. Even the material that shouldn’t be all that funny, it actually works because of how skilled Martin and Moranis are at this sort of banter. The whole movie is full of great laughs and, at the very least, some good chuckles. This standard odd couple relationship, like the fish out of water plot, is made fresh and new by the cast and approach to the material.

It’s very funny watching Martin take over the small town. He meets some of his old buddies, also in the witness protection program, and they all decide to get together and form a sort of mini-mafia of their own. You’d think that watching these guys steal trucks and threaten people in the small town would be scary, but in fact, it’s kind of cute, playful. They have a lot of fun with it and it really does seem like it’s all in the name of having a good time rather than ripping people off.

Even though the movie does get into organized crime, murder and so on, the end result is really a film that is cute, innocent, funny. The violence is never really scary or suspenseful so much as… Well, a shootout provides a fun bonding experience for Martin and Moranis, and another gunfight towards the end of the film provides one of its biggest laughs “I lied, now where was I?”

One of the movie’s other big sources of laughter comes from Steve Martin’s philandering. He starts the movie with a wife, gets a girlfriend, and then gets another girlfriend. It’s a lot of fun watching him effortlessly juggle three women. He’s a crook, but such a likable crook that you really don’t hold it against him when he lies, steals and cheats on three women at once.

The movie has a really great look to it. The whole point of the film is the contrast between Martin’s violent, urban upbringing, and the small town friendliness and beauty of his new environs, and the cinematography really does the trick. Martin’s new home is really set in a gorgeous land of blue skies and green hills.

The movie might not be one of the greatest films ever made, but it’s somewhere in Steve Martin’s top ten, and certainly one of Nora Ephron’s best. At the very least, it beats watching just another dating comedy from the writer.

Tarkenton continued his criticism on a local radio station:

“I think he has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen. Look at his final game in a Packers uniform. He blew that game NFC championship against the Giants.

“I really think the whole Brett Favre saga of retiring, unretiring, three weeks ago saying ‘I can’t play,’ the Vikings said, ‘We’re moving on,’ it’s a circus. It’s an absolute circus, and it takes away from all the other things that are going on with the Vikings, with the NFL. We’re getting ready for a football season and this is a circus and I just have no interest in it.

“Wouldn’t you be upset if you’re a Packer fan? I think you’re going to have Packer fans burning the No. 4 Favre Green Bay jersey. I think the Packer fans have every right to be outraged.”

Kansas Citys head coach Todd Haley made his NFL coaching debut, and wasn’t particularly down about it being a loss:

“It’s your first game as head coach and I know it’s just preseason, but it was an exciting, exciting moment for me. If you tell me the first real one’s a win, I’ll take this loss any day of the week. It’s a special feeling when it’s your team and a lot of responsibility comes with that and I didn’t live up to my end of that. That’s the part that’s got to change.”

“We did some good things. I didn’t play great, but I played OK. We wanted to look better. We wanted to understand situations better.”

McCown was 6 of 9 for 51 yards, but cashed in two touchdown passes. Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris had little comment on his QBs play, but indicated that hed look to name a starter later this week:

It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn’t. And we had to stop Ray and we didn’t. Kudos to Edmonton.”

Both teams have a bye next week. Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton. The two CFL provincial rivals from Alberta will face each other twice more this season.
